The Budapest M1 Metro, known as the Millennium Underground (Millenniumi Földalatti Vasút), was inaugurated in 1896 and is the oldest metro in continental Europe and the second in the world after London. The image shows the interior of a station with preserved original elements: green cast iron columns with floral decorations, white wall tiles with brown borders, wooden doors and vaulted ceiling. This line, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, connects Vörösmarty tér with Városliget Park along Andrássy Avenue, maintaining the charm of the Belle Époque intact.
