San Nicola pier in Bari is seen from a few metres above the ground, looking south-east towards the seafront. The paved surface of the pier fills the foreground, bordered by stone posts and metal railings. On either side, three-lantern lamp posts stand on raised bases, their lights still on; a bench on the right faces the sea. The pier extends into the sea from the Araldo di Crollalanza seafront, between the old harbour and the stretch of coast leading towards Largo Giannella. It is the embarkation point for the statue of Saint Nicholas during the maritime procession on 8 May. The statue is carried from the basilica to the pier and, after Mass, taken aboard a fishing boat accompanied by other vessels. Across the calm water, the seafront buildings are dominated by the tower of the Palazzo della Provincia. On the left, a sailing boat lies at anchor beside a long breakwater. The photograph was taken on an early October morning, about a quarter of an hour before sunrise. Thin high clouds are tinged with pink and orange, their colours reflected in the sea.
