The Grande Albergo delle Nazioni and the waterfront terrace at Largo Giannella in Bari, viewed from a drone over the sea before dawn
This view of Bari's seafront was taken from a drone approximately twenty-two metres above its take-off point, over the sea north-west of Largo Giannella, looking south-east. In the right foreground, the curved waterfront terrace at Largo Giannella overlooks the water, bordered by a balustrade and street lamps. The Grande Albergo delle Nazioni stands in the centre, at the corner of the Nazario Sauro seafront and Piazza Diaz. On the left, breakwaters line the shore; beyond the hotel, the waterfront buildings extend towards the tower of the Palazzo della Provincia. The Grande Albergo delle Nazioni was designed in 1932 by the architect Alberto Calza Bini and opened in 1935, with sea-facing rooms and a panoramic terrace. An additional floor with a large covered terrace was added in 1964. After a long period of decline and several changes of ownership, the hotel was restored and reopened in 2012. The photograph was taken in early October, about forty minutes before sunrise. The sky is deep blue, with a pink cloud above the buildings and an orange band on the horizon. Lights along the seafront and the waterfront terrace cast long vertical reflections on the water.
