In the middle of the harbour of Bisceglie rises a block of limestone ashlar masonry topped by large stone bollards: these are the remains of the eighteenth-century pier, now standing isolated in the harbour basin and surrounded by the marina's floating pontoons. The photograph shows these remains from a few metres up, from the sea towards the town, with the structure in the foreground and the quay behind. The historic town forms the backdrop: the quay retaining wall with its arches, the row of waterfront buildings with stone and plastered facades and, above the roofs, the clock tower with its spire and the imposing Romanesque cathedral of San Pietro. On the left, the stretch of wall closing the harbour towards via La Spiaggia. Taken in late October, about an hour before sunset, with the low sun on the right lighting the facades and leaving the north side of the pier in shadow.
