Torre Calderina at sunset seen from the sea, with the coastline and the town of Molfetta behind it
The photograph was taken from the sea, with the drone flying low in front of the rocky shore, and shows Torre Calderina from the west looking east-south-east: the coastline stretches behind the tower towards Molfetta, with the town visible on the horizon to the right, while the Adriatic opens up on the left. Torre Calderina is one of the coastal watchtowers of the Kingdom of Naples, completed in 1569 as part of the defensive system built by the Spanish against raids from the sea. It has a square plan and a body shaped like a truncated pyramid, with a battered base widening towards the rock, a string course and, below the upper floor, the row of corbels that once carried the machicolations. At the top are a terrace and a small rooftop structure. Around the tower lies the Torre Calderina protected area, one of the few stretches of this coast still free of buildings. The picture dates from late October, a few minutes before sunset, with the low sun behind the photographer casting a raking light on the limestone masonry. Dark clouds fill the sky above the tower, while part of a rainbow is visible to the right, towards the town.
