The snow-covered courtyard of Vianden Castle with Romanesque arches

The inner courtyard of Vianden Castle appears covered by a blanket of snow that enhances the medieval architecture of the complex. The residential palace rises with its mullioned and triple-mullioned windows, typical of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, while on the right a gallery with blind arches testifies to the influence of religious architecture. The grey stones of the buildings contrast with the white snow and the leaden winter sky. In the foreground the remains of a perimeter wall with its battlements recall the original defensive function of the castle. This winter atmosphere gives the place a particular charm, evoking the harsh seasons that the lords of Vianden had to face.
