The photograph depicts the Führerbunker, the structure that housed Adolf Hitler's personal quarters at the Wolfsschanze. The building, constructed with reinforced concrete walls up to eight meters thick, represented the heart of the Eastern Front headquarters. The massive structure, partially collapsed after the 1945 demolitions, still stands among the trees of the Polish forest. The fir trees grown around and above the ruins create an atmosphere of abandonment. Hitler spent over 800 days here between 1941 and 1944, directing military operations on the Eastern Front.
