The Monument to the Warsaw Uprising Heroes, inaugurated in 1989, is one of the most important memorials in the Polish capital. The bronze sculptural complex, by Wincenty Kucma, depicts Polish resistance fighters in various dynamic poses: some emerge from rubble, others descend into the sewers that were used as escape routes during the August-October 1944 uprising. In the background, the modern courthouse facade with tall columns creates a solemn contrast. The uprising cost the lives of approximately 200,000 civilians and led to the near-total destruction of the city by the Nazis.
