The churchyard of Santa Maria de la Asuncion with commemorative statue and view over the Bay of Biscay
The photograph shows the wide paved churchyard opening in front of the western facade of the church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. The mighty Gothic structure rises on the left, with its sandstone facade, large rose window, and pointed arch portal. At the center of the square, on a stone base surrounded by a railing, stands a commemorative statue depicting a blessing figure. The pavement of gray and red stone cubes creates geometric patterns. On the right, beyond the balustrade, opens the view of the sea and coast. The cloudy sky typical of the Atlantic climate creates a dramatic atmosphere that enhances the warm tones of the stone. This square, called Plaza de la Iglesia, is one of the most evocative places in Castro Urdiales, starting point for visiting the monumental complex on the promontory.
