The image shows the main facade of the Almudena Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saint of Madrid, the Virgen de la Almudena. The building, whose construction began in 1883 and was completed only in 1993 with the consecration by Pope John Paul II, presents an eclectic style that blends Neoclassical, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque elements. The gray stone facade is topped by a dome with lantern and two twin bell towers. The cathedral stands opposite the Royal Palace, on the area where the church of Santa Maria once stood, destroyed in the 19th century. The square in front offers an open space that allows appreciation of the monumentality of the building.
