Stortorget square, the beating heart of Gamla Stan, Stockholm's old town, presents itself in all its nocturnal beauty. Historic buildings in pastel colors - yellow, orange, and red - surround the square, their facades illuminated by warm lights. In the center, the historic well and blurred silhouettes of passersby crossing the space can be glimpsed. A decorative wrought iron sign hangs from one of the buildings. This square is Stockholm's oldest, dating back to the 13th century, and was the scene of the infamous Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, when Danish King Christian II had dozens of Swedish nobles executed. Today it is a beloved location for the Christmas market.
