View of the Sachsenhausen camp perimeter with the concrete wall, barbed wire fence, and Tower A visible in the background. The black ground between the wall and fence constituted the neutral zone, constantly monitored by guards in the towers. The camp architecture, designed by SS architect Bernhard Kuiper in 1936, was conceived as a model for all future concentration camps. The triangular shape of the complex allowed guards in Tower A to control the entire camp from a single observation point.
