Hradcany Square in Prague with sgraffito-decorated Schwarzenberg Palace and historic lamppost
The image portrays Hradcany Square, the wide space preceding the entrance to Prague Castle. On the left dominates Schwarzenberg Palace, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture built between 1545 and 1576. The facade is entirely decorated with sgraffito technique creating a three-dimensional diamond-point rustication effect. Stepped gables crown the structure according to typical Bohemian Renaissance style. In the center of the square stands an elegant green cast iron lamppost with five arms, typical of 19th-century urban furnishing. On the right side, the Archbishop Palace with its pink facade borders the square. Some tourists stroll enjoying the panoramic view of the city opening from this height. The Marian column at the back commemorates plague victims.
