The common cells of Block A housed dozens of prisoners in spaces designed for few people. Detainees slept on straw pallets or directly on the stone floor, crammed together. Sanitary conditions were terrible and epidemics frequent. The lack of space, air, and light contributed to the rapid spread of diseases that decimated prisoners.
