A half-buried German bunker at Pointe du Hoc with the commemorative obelisk in the background. These Atlantic Wall fortifications housed 155mm guns that threatened both Utah and Omaha Beach. The still visible craters testify to the intense naval and air bombardment that preceded the landing.
