The photograph shows the choir and apse of Notre-Dame Cathedral of Strasbourg, where the original Romanesque architecture blends with later additions. The apsidal basin is decorated with precious Byzantine-style mosaics made in the 19th century, depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by saints and apostles. In the center, the high altar topped by a gilded crucifix. The tall Gothic windows with polychrome stained glass illuminate the sacred space with colored and soft light. This area of the cathedral preserves elements of the 11th-century Romanesque building, prior to the Gothic reconstruction.
