The iron gate with the cynical inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Sets You Free), one of the cruelest lies of the Nazi regime. This phrase, which greeted prisoners at the entrance to Dachau, falsely promised freedom through work, while in reality forced labor was a tool of annihilation. The original gate was stolen in 2014 and found two years later in Norway; the one currently visible is a replica. Over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries passed through this gate during the camp's 12 years of operation.
