The Frauenkirche dominates Neumarkt square with its imposing sandstone dome, symbol of Dresden rebirth. This Lutheran church, built between 1726 and 1743 to a design by George Baehr, represents one of the greatest masterpieces of Protestant Baroque architecture. Collapsed during the 1945 bombings, its ruins remained as a warning for decades. The reconstruction, completed in 2005, integrated the original stones darkened by fire with new light-colored ones, creating a mosaic that testifies to the building history. The colorful buildings surrounding the square have also been rebuilt following the original designs.
