This panoramic photograph offers the most iconic view of Balos lagoon, taken from the highest point of the path descending to the beach. The lagoon extends in the foreground with its waters in a thousand shades of blue, green, and turquoise, separated from the open sea by a thin strip of white sand where bathers arrange themselves to sunbathe. At the center of the composition dominates Gramvousa island, a massive rocky promontory on whose summit stand the remains of the Venetian fortress built in 1579. Some tourist boats are moored in the bay, bringing visitors from Kissamos. On the horizon, beyond Gramvousa, another small island can be glimpsed. The clear sky and calm sea create an atmosphere of absolute peace in this remote corner of Crete.
