The image portrays the famous Plaza Mayor of Madrid, one of the most emblematic squares in Spain. In the center stands the bronze equestrian statue of Philip III, work of Giambologna and Pietro Tacca, placed here in 1848. In the background dominates the Casa de la Panaderia, a seventeenth-century building with characteristic frescoed facades and two side towers topped by spires. The square, rectangular in shape and completely arcaded, was built between 1617 and 1619 at the behest of Philip III and has hosted markets, bullfights, public executions and royal festivities over the centuries. Today it represents the tourist heart of the Spanish capital.
