Castro Urdiales, the Gothic pearl of the Cantabrian coast

Spain Castro Urdiales

Photographic collection dedicated to Castro Urdiales, an ancient seafaring town located on the eastern coast of Cantabria, in northern Spain. The images document the architectural heritage of this village overlooking the Bay of Biscay, dominated by the majestic Gothic church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion, built between the 13th and 15th centuries and considered one of the most important examples of Cantabrian Gothic. The photographs show details of the flying buttresses and Gothic windows, panoramic views from the rocky promontory where the monumental complex stands with the lighthouse and remains of the Templar castle, the squares of the old town with characteristic buildings with wooden balconies, and the lively harbor promenade. Castro Urdiales preserves the atmosphere of ancient Basque and Cantabrian seafaring towns.
